Unexpected (Dirk Strider x Abused! Reader) Epilogue

A few days after your fateful visit, Dirk was released from the hospital. It was hard for you to decide whether or not you were more anxious or excited about his return. Sure, you had visited him at the hospital but... For some reason you were completely nerve-wracked about him ‘coming home.’ It was hard to concentrate on your studies – you were being home-schooled for the time being, considering everything that had happened – and Jade had suggested that you take a break multiple times.

The moment you saw him walk in, though, you could tell he was feeling the same nervousness that you were. Though he had those stupid shades on again, his blonde hair was a mess and his hands were shaking slightly. It was weird, how you were so relieved to see him just as nervous as you. After all, it was only recently that you nearly believed he didn’t show emotion. It was a relief to know that even as he tried to hide the fact that he was nervous, he couldn’t get rid of all of the signs.

Two weeks practically flew by, and your 18th birthday had finally arrived. In the beginning, you were supposed to marry Dirk on the day of your birthday. However, upon realizing that the succession contract your parents made only really required you to be engaged by 18 to inherit the country, the date was changed to the day after. For once in your life, Jade let your birthday be a small affair. Dirk, Sollux, (b/f/n), and Jade had been the only ones there. For the most part, you just hung out and talked. There was a surprise, later on that day, though. Dave, Dirk’s aforementioned older brother, had shown up earlier than expected. He and Jade had known each other for a long time. They were childhood friends, but had lost touch with each other over the years. His arrival to the party gave Jade someone to talk to, someone to distract herself from all of the worries plaguing her mind.

The wedding was also a very small affair, much to Jade’s disappointment. However; it was televised, so of course, she wasn’t too riled up. Sollux and Dave were the groomsmen, Dave being the best man, considering his relation to Dirk. The maid of honor was your sister, Jade. (B/f/n) was your other bridesmaid. The men all looked very handsome in crisp black tuxedos with orange bow-ties. The color theme just so happened to be orange, which was Dirk’s idea. No surprises there. The bridesmaids wore beautifully-lengthed orange and white dresses, which fit perfectly on both of them and looked amazing.

And then, there was your dress. Jade had gone with you to pick one out, and it had taken a while. You weren’t high-maintenance, nor looking for the absolute perfect dress, but Jade wanted to make sure you were happy. Each time you tried one on and she asked you how you felt about it, you usually just shrugged and said something along the lines of “Yeah, sure.” There was only one dress that really caught your eye, one that made you smile when you tried it on. Jade, of course, noticed this immediately and bought it for you. You didn’t even get a chance to look at the price. Your hair had been styled gorgeously, and there was an orange flower pin affixed to the (h/c) strands. Over all, you just looked amazing, and a collective gasp had sounded through the small audience that attended the wedding.

The vows were beautiful and emotional, and both yours and Dirk’s had to do with how you didn’t even think twice about being with each other at first... And yet, there you were, and you had actually fallen in love with each other. Just after, you thought you heard Dave mutter something about irony under his breath, but you couldn’t really tell.

Over all, the whole ceremony was nerve-wracking, emotional, and when it was finally over? The lot of you were just relieved to be through with it. Jade had worked the hardest of all to make it happen, though. She’d organized everything, made all of the arrangements, paid for it all. The reception was all about thanking her with a side of celebrating the fact that you and Dirk were united and that things would get better for Northwestern Earth.

And things did, in fact, get better. You worked hard to restore order, to restore the economy, to bring back the smiles on peoples' faces. Dirk, much to your surprise, was actually very useful. He wasn’t necessarily a leader, but he was extremely good with technology and combat, so it’s safe to say that the country’s military and technological advances had a lot to do with him. Soon enough, you and Dirk were the most beloved rulers of Northwestern Earth, and peace ensconced the land.

You and Dirk had your fights, like any couple, but with the resolve of each one, you learned to trust each other more. You learned to communicate how you were feeling properly. You learned things about each other that you had never known. You two were probably the happiest out of everyone about this union.

However...

It wasn’t an entirely happy ending.

I know what you really want to hear about in this ending.

I know who you really care to know about right now.

William.

William was convicted of a first-degree murder attempt. After several tries to escape from prison, there was no possibility of parole. He’d gotten a life sentence, and you and Dirk made d*mn sure that there was no way he’d ever be getting out of it.

Dirk had wanted the courts to give him the death penalty for what he’d put you through... But you immediately rejected his idea. You didn’t want William to escape his punishment, his sick consciousness, his confinement. You wanted him to live like you did. In fear of every new day's light. In pain. Not because you wanted revenge... But because you wanted justice. You’d had him put in one of the more... Violent prisons. Needless to say, William was definitely not living in comfort.

“(Y/n)?” You heard his voice mumble your name sleepily and you shifted around to face him, caressing his cheek with the pad of your thumb.

“Hm, Dirk?” You acknowledged, and his eyes opened. Those beautiful eyes that you never got used to seeing. Those gentle pools of orange sunset, always having some inexplicable affect on you. He pulled you closer with the arm that was already wrapped around your waist.

“If you could go back... And not have any of that bullsh*t happen to you... Would you...?” He asked, looking genuinely curious. Dirk always pondered deep things during the night. He had trouble sleeping, and so did you, so most nights you would both just cherish the feeling of being in each other’s hold. You frowned, looking away. His eyebrows had been furrowed slightly in the middle, though his messy blonde hair covered most of his forehead.

Would you?

...

“No.” You answered honestly, with somewhat of a grimace. Dirk was silent for a moment, and you turned your (e/c) gaze back towards him. He was grinning sleepily.

“Are the rumours really true, then? Are you a masochist?” He asked sarcastically. You nearly snorted, rolling your eyes and punching him lightly on the arm, an amused smile gently gracing your lips. After a while, though, your smile faded, and so did his, and the moment became more serious. His eyes held an unasked question. 'Why?' You bit your lip.

“...Even with everything I had to go through... I feel like all of it made me who I am today. I don’t want to be anyone else. But, more importantly, I don’t want to be with anyone else. Even though I still may have met you despite everything... I feel like I’d probably have the same view on you now that I did when I first saw you. I would have never gotten to know you. I would have never let you in. It would have been completely different... And I don’t want anything else. I want what we have here, right now. I love you... And I don’t think I’d have ever realized that without going through what I did.” By the time you were finished, there was a dark red blush on your face.

Dirk had listened intently, and when you were finished, he smiled the most beautiful smile you’d ever seen grace his lips. It enhanced his beautiful eyes, practically making them shine. He looked so... Happy. You couldn’t help but let a shy smile grace your own lips as you admired his features.

“To be honest... I feel the same way. Even though now I look back at my own thoughts when I first met you and cringe. I was so harsh and critical, and I didn't understand anything.” He spoke in his deep voice, and you laughed slightly.

“Yep, sounds like you.” You commented and he narrowed his eyes at you.

“Excuse me? What’s that supposed to mean, hm?” He asked sarcastically, and you looked up and away, humming slightly.

“Oh, nothing!” With those words you both laughed. Dirk’s forehead met yours gently, and he looked into your eyes with nothing but love and awe. You smiled and he leaned in. Your lips brushed together with his in one of the many kisses you had come to love sharing with him. He pulled away, his warm hand fitting perfectly to your neck as he continued to gaze at you happily.

“By the way, (y/n)...” He trailed off, and you once again acknowledged his words.

“Hm?”

“...I love you too.”
